More Quakes Rattle the State

quakeOK Energy Today – While the Oklahoma Corporation Commission studies the impact of its latest steps in controlling earthquakes and wastewater disposal wells, northern Oklahoma was shaken by more earthquakes.

Two happened Monday morning near Mooreland. The first was at 3:35 a.m. and measured 3.3 magnitude. Eighteen minutes later, a 2.9 magnitude temblor happened.

Experts say damage was not likely from the quakes. The first quake was about 3 miles deep while the second quake was deeper at nearly 6 miles below the surface of the earth.

Over the weekend, weaker earthquakes occurred near Waukomis, Perry and Edmond. Each was less than 3.0 magnitude. They happened Sunday night.

The Corporation Commission moved earlier in February to have operators in a 5,200 square mile of northwestern Oklahoma to reduce injection volumes by more than 500,000 barrels a day.
